Xian was the capital of the Tang Dynasty, the most prosperous and colorful of China’s ancient dynasties. Visitors are transported back in time to that most spectacular dynasty. Live music is performed by an orchestra playing music written during the Tang Dynasty on period styled instruments while dancers wearing Tang Dynasty styled clothing dance and whirl. It is a wonderful combination of art, culture, music and dance.

When many visitors think of Xian, they think of history and the famous Terracotta Warriors. There is much more to Xian than just these. Shaanxi Opera is a very ancient opera found in northwest China. Originating in the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC) it has been evolving for thousands of years. The performance is accompanied by a number of unique and rarely heard instruments. The arias of Shaanxi Opera are performed in an exaggerated style, but without the falsetto often found in Peking (Beijing) Opera. Shaanxi Opera has facial makeup similar to that in Peking Opera, but it also has many differences that make it unique from Peking Opera. The costumes are much different as well as the performing style. During the performance there are many different arts performed that is not seen in Peking Opera. These include: Fire eating, Chair balancing, Spear performance, performing with flaming sticks, and tumbling. It makes for a very exciting experience!

Xian’s shadow puppets are famous throughout China and versions of it can be found in many parts of the country. Shadow puppets are jointed puppets made of thin donkey, or cow hide. The puppets are controlled with thin sticks similar to chopsticks. The puppets are moved behind a screen with a light behind them. The shadows of the puppets are shown on the screen and can be seen by the audience. The puppet is accompanied by a small band of musicians and the puppet shows are always about legends, battles, and mythological creatures. The puppet shows are full of energy and excitement. Shadow puppets can be found for sale throughout Xian and one wonderful place to find them is behind Xian’s ancient Drum Tower.

Normally thought of as an ancient city, Xian has become a modern metropolis, and its nightlife is proof of this. The most famous bar street in Xian is the Defu Lane. This street has bars to cater to everyone’s taste. Every evening, businessmen, students, and visitors congregate here to enjoy live music, performances, and drinks. It is a great way to unwind after a busy day of touring. Another great place to go during the night is the Bell and Drum Towers in the center of Xian’s ancient city. At night the towers are lit and look spectacular. The market behind the Drum Tower is fantastic and offers wonderful arts and crafts, tea, shadow puppets and art supplies. Also at night many visitors like to go to the musical fountain near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The spectacular fountain is lit and computer controlled to dance to the music. It is especially popular with children who marvel at the dancing water.

Xian has so much to offer. Many visitors come to Xian, see the Terracotta Warriors, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Ancient City Wall, and then head on to their next destination. They have no idea how much more this ancient yet modern city has to offer.

Qibao water Town

As the only ancient town forming part of greater Shanghai, with a history spanning over one thousand years, Qibao is more than just a living fossil of ancient Chinese conurbation and urban planning. The town was built in Han Dynasty and developed in Northern Song Dynasty (960 – 1126) and grew into a prosperous business center during Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644 – 1911).

Name

Qibao is the Chinese for “seven treasures” and there are two popular theories about its derivation. The more reliable one says that the name originates from the Qibao Temple, famed for its good reputation. It was this that contributed to the growth of business and culture of the previously unknown town.

The other theory seems more popular among the local people who tell folk tales about seven treasures. These were an iron Buddha made in Ming Dynasty, a bronze bell also dating from the Ming Dynasty but said to have mysteriously appeared from nowhere, a Gold Script Lotus Sutra written by an imperial concubine of the 10th century, a one-thousand-year-old Chinese catalpa tree, a jade axe, a gold cockerel and a pair of jade chopsticks. Actually of these seven treasures, the existence of only first four can be verified while only the Scripture and the bell have survived to this day.

See

Town

The old town occupies about two square kilometers, crossed by two water lanes. Around the water lanes, stand a large number of well preserved traditional houses, gardens, temples, shops and restaurants which define the place.
Street

The old street in the heart of the tiny town is the epitome of old Shanghai. The street has been restored to its original look which is consisted of two sections, southern and western lesser streets.

Road and lane

The old, time-worn stone roads and narrow lanes left by the Song Dynasty while the temples, gardens, pavilions, houses has been well preserved from Ming and Qing Dynasty, which features black- bricked walls, elegantly decorated tiles.

Qibao Temple

Dating from the period of Five Dynasties and Ten States (907 – 960) and largely renovated and extended during Ming Dynasty, the Temple is held in high regard by the local populace not only because it was said to contain the seven treasures but also for its splendid appearance and the great significance it has had in fostering the development of Qibao Town.

The temple used to cover an area exceeding 40 mu (144 acres), excluding the surrounding rivers of 6 mu (22 acres) when it blossomed in Ming Dynasty. A revered monk named Jing used to study and interpret the scriptures here, something that was recorded in the inscriptions carved on the bronze bell.

The temple was rebuilt in 2002 and now covers a total area of 43 mu (155 acres) and was opened to public in the following January. The new Qibao Temple, with its ingenious designs for both buildings and gardens, presents visitors with an insight of the unique architectural styles of Han (B.C. 206 – 220) and Tang Dynasty (618 – 907).

Within this area of 21.3 square kilometers (8.22 square miles) that forms the ancient streets and a newly developed district, Qibao Town carries visitors back through the centuries by virtue of its history, culture, architecture and local people. A day spent in this unique and historic town will be very rewarding and is highly recommended.

Shanghai Water Town – Zhujiajiao

If you are planning on a China tour and you want to be educated on how life was in the ancient days, then Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is the place for you. Zhujiajiao is located in Shanghai suburbs. The only way to get here is by a tour bus, so it is going to be far from your Shanghai hotel.

Zhujiajiao Town has 1700 years worth of history. It started as a very small village during The Three Kingdom Period (220-280) then turned in a bazaar in the Song and Yuan Dynasties Era (960-1398). Over the years more and more people took up residency, because of its booming businesses. Then in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) it developed into a town.

Another name for the Zhujiajiao town is the ‘Pearl Stream’ since the town is built around the water. The area of the town is 18.1 miles. Huangshan Travel Tips

1. Trekking in Mt.Huangshan
There are two sightseeing choices of Yellow Mountain tour.

The majority of overseas tourists usually make their tour on the rear part of the top, that is to say they get onto the top from eastern side and their hiking is extended around the concentrated scenic highlights, such as Bright Top, Lion Peak, and Begin-believe Peak.
The tourists covering this part are satisfied with easy-reached scenic spots and gentle walk paths.

But most the domestic tourists and some energetic overseas back-packers prefer trekking from the front part to the rear part of the mountain top. They start from Mercy-light Pavilion either on foot or by cable car, they will challenge the following well-know spots: Celestial Capital Peak, Jade Screen Peak, they will have a rest at Greeting Pine areas. Afterwards they will conquer pass by Lotus Peak and thread through Narrow Passage. Then they can have a big lunch at a flat top before they continue the trekking to the Bright Top. By then they join the two parts together. The greatest benefits of trekking from the front part are that you can conquer the summit and enjoy the different styles of the splendid landscapes: the lofty peaks and narrow passages on the front and vivid-looking rocks on the cliff in the rear part.

According to our 10 years of Mt.Huangshan tour experience, you can try the front—rear tour path if you are not aged and little bit energetic. The only challenge is 4 hour’s trekking on the path, down and up steps by turn all the way. But you will have a worthy reward as you can cover all the major scenic spots on the top.
